PRAYER BY MUTHAL NAIDOO Let us prey for we were set on earth to prey prey on those beneath who pray to those above that we will not prey on them God be merciful We cannot

PRAYER Prof Naidoo wrote prayer in the 1960’s Relevance Non- whites were oppressed, segregated, violated and discriminated against.

PRAYER IN TODAY’S SOCIAL CONTEXT figuratively South Africans are the hunter to foreigners (xenophobia) Men are the hunters to women (femicide)

PRAYER BY MUTHAL NAIDOO LITERAL MEANING Animal’s core nature is to hunt or be hunted, they hunt on the weak and inferior creatures and weak creatures relay on God or someone with more stronger powers. The poem is based on the hunt or be hunted, on the justification that human nature or animalistic nature is to prey on the weak.

PRAYER- DICTION Diction refers to the author's choice of words and the order of the words within a poem Precise and unique diction brings the reader into the scene, enabling full presence in the writer's world.

DICTION Pray- Prey Is a form of word play used by the poet to further her message and imagery in the poem

IMAGERY Imagery in poetry creates similar snapshots in a reader's mind. Poets use imagery to draw readers into a sensory experience. Images will often provide us with mental snapshots that appeal to our senses of sight, sound, taste, touch, and smell.

WHY LEARN POETRY AND SPECIFICALLY WHY LEARN THIS POEM Poetry is a form of expression. Writing it lets us get out our feelings and thoughts on a subject while, reading it encourages us to connect and find meaning in our experiences. Poetry can have a positive impact on the social and emotional learning
