Purpose is to promote economic interests of its members Examples include Agricultural Labor Business Professional

4 Purposes 2. Nontraditional
Purpose is to protest the status of its members and convince the government to take remedial action Examples NAACP ACT UP NOW

5 Purposes 3. Single Issue Purpose is to get governmental action on one issue Examples NRA Right to Life NORML

6 Purposes Public Interest
Purpose is to bring about good policy for society as a whole Examples Common Cause, Public Citizen (Nader’s group) LWV Sierra Club

7 Purposes Ideological Purposes is to convince government to implement policies that are consistent with their philosophies Examples ACLU Christian Coalition People for the American Way American Conservative Union

8 Purposes PAC’s Purpose is to contribute to campaigns

9 Incentives for Joining
Solidary Incentive Social Benefits – friendship, intellectual stimulation, romance, etc. Material Incentive Tangible Benefits – discounts, prizes Purposive Incentive Satisfaction of getting something done
