June 1775: Vote to form Continental Army out of militia units
George Washington named commanding General
July 1775: Congress draws up the Olive Branch Petition.
Politely asking King George III to intercede with Parliament for a cause of peace
Also a profession of loyalty to the crown

Common Sense, was a pro- independence monograph published anonymously by Paine on 10 January 1776.
Paine's strength lay in his ability to present complex ideas in a clear and concise form versus other philosophers
