Watch the provided video and answer the questions on your guided notes. 1. What were the three main causes of the plague? Explain for each. 2. The plague has occurred three times in human history. Name each time. 3. Did trade make people better off?

Mapping Instructions: On the map color in all city names as listed below. 1. Color all cities and key Purple where the plague hit in 1347 2. Color all cities and key Red where the plague hit in 1348 3. Color all cities and key Green where the plague hit in 1349 4. Color all cities and key Brown where the plague hit in 1350 5. Circle the city of Kafa on the northern edge of the Black Sea. It is said that the Mongols engaged in biological warfare with the Genoese by catapulting dead bodies, infected with the plague, at their enemies. Label and draw the route the Genoese must have taken to return home to Genoa. 6. Label each city with the month AND year of infection – look for patterns!

13 Ottomans and Trade The Ottoman state began in 1300 by a warrior for Islam. Ottomans enforced a strict Islamic Code of Conduct and focused on conquering land and trade routes. What city did they control that gave them an advantage over Europeans Asians?

14 The Ottomans were able to control what was traded between European and Asia and often kept weapons from China to themselves. How did this help them build their Empire? How did this harm the Europeans?

15 The Ottomans improved the life of those they conquered, had local officials rule, allowed religious freedom and improved the economy. People in conquered lands could pay an exemption tax to avoid military services, but many wanted to join the Janissaries (elite force) because they would be educated, trained, and could improve their social and economic status. How did this help them grow their empire and trade routes?
