Pyramids start being built as kings become powerful. The first step pyramids were built by King Djoser. King Snefru and his son, Khufu, innovated the pyramid design to look smooth on the outside. Great pyramids had been built at Giza, and many more were built in this period. Gold mines produced great wealth, writing and crafts became an everyday way of life. Archaeologists think pyramids stopped being built about 1750 BC and Kings were buried in tombs carved out of rock near Thebes, the ancient capital. After being invaded, King Ahmose united Egypt again. This period was one of great power and wealth, including a female Queen – Hatshepsut. Great Kings ruled such as Amenhotep III and Ramesses II. There were also controversial kings such as Akhenaten and his son, Tutankhamen Egypt A country found in the North of Africa and West Asia civilisation The way of life and ways of doing things through an ordered community. River Nile A long, snaking river that flows through the heart of Egypt. It is the longest river in the world at 6,675km mummification An ancient process to preserve a dead body irrigation Getting water to crops to help them grow Afterlife The belief that when you died you could go to a place that was the ideal version of Egypt, to find: complete bliss, delight and peace. shaduf A machine, with a heavy weight at one end of a rod and a bucket at the other, used to raise water from the River Nile to help irrigate crops. hieroglyphics Picture writing that uses symbols (hieroglyphs) instead of letters and words Pharaoh The Greek name, we use, that is given to a ruler in Ancient Egypt papyrus Sheets made from the pith of a water plant, when dried could be written, painted or used as rope.
