Pyramids start being built as kings become powerful. The first step pyramids were built by King Djoser. King Snefru and his son, Khufu, innovated the pyramid design to look smooth on the outside.
Great pyramids had been built at Giza, and many more were built in this period. Gold mines produced great wealth, writing and crafts became an everyday way of life.
Archaeologists think pyramids stopped being built about 1750 BC and Kings were buried in tombs carved out of rock near Thebes, the ancient capital.
After being invaded, King Ahmose united Egypt again. This period was one of great power and wealth, including a female Queen – Hatshepsut.
Great Kings ruled such as Amenhotep III and Ramesses II. There were also controversial kings such as Akhenaten and his son, Tutankhamen
