The Adena were taken over by the Hopewell.
Red represented the color of blood and life. The Adena believed the red paint allow the person's spirit to live after death.

6. Hopewell Location: Ohio River Valley and Mississippi River Valley.
Larger Mounds
Extensive trade (Hopewell Exchange Network)
Civilization declined after trade declined.

7. Mississippians Location: Mississippi River Valley
Largest Pyramid-shaped mounds
Cahokia – very large city
Not sure why their civilization declined.

Used ceremonial rain dances
First lived in caves and cliffs; later they made houses out of mud and brick.
Abandoned cities (probably due to drought)
