1 Warm Up Hannah scored an 85% on Dr. Lutze’s first AP Stats quiz. Her friend Katherine, who is in Mrs. Hall’s class, scored an 81%. Hannah thought she did better than her friend. Then Katherine found the mean and standard deviation for each class, which are shown below. Mean Std. Dev Lutze Hall Who actually did better on the quiz and why? Please note: This data is not real !!!

2 Gas Tax This is data on the gasoline tax (in cents per gallon) charged in various states in 2018. 1) Calculate the mean, std dev, median and IQR for the data. 2) The U.S. government gas tax is about 18 cents/gallon. Calculate mean, std dev, median, and IQR including the federal tax. 3) Assume every state doubles their gas tax. Calculate mean, std dev, median and IQR for the new state tax only (no federal tax). State Gas Tax State Gas Tax Alabama Maine Alaska Michigan 26.3 Arizona Missouri 17.3 California Nevada 23.8 Florida Oregon 34.0 Hawaii Pennsylvania 57.6 Idaho Texas Iowa Washington 49.4

3 Data Collection - Sudoku
To solve a Sudoku puzzle, place a number into each box so that each row across, each column down, and each small 3x3 box within the larger box (there are 9 of these) will contain the numbers 1 through 9. Use the numbers already given to find the missing numbers.

4 Data Collection - Sudoku
You will be given an “easy” Sudoku puzzle to solve. Working independently, fill in as many empty boxes as you can in 7 minutes. Your score will be the number of empty boxes you have filled in correctly.

5 Data Collection - Sudoku
1) Calculate the mean, standard deviation, median and IQR for the data set. 2) If we gave students credit for the 35 boxes that were already filled in, what would be the new values for the mean, standard deviation, median and IQR?

6 Density Curve Sometimes, the overall pattern of a large number of observations is so regular that we can describe it using a smooth curve.

7 Practice 1) Make a histogram of our Sudoku data. The histogram should have approximately 6-8 classes. 2) Sketch a density curve that approximates your histogram. 3) Sketch the position of the median and the mean on the histogram/density curve. 4) Describe the shape of the distribution.
