Bone marrow pro B cells give rise to CD122pos NKB precursors in an Id-2-dependent manner. Activation of splenic NKBP by infections with various intracellular pathogens such as Salmonella Typhimurium and Listeria monocytogenes causes rapid activation and differentiation to IL-12 and IL-18 producing CD122neg NKB cells. These cytokines in turn trigger IFN-γ production by ILC1, including NK cells, which leads to induction of Th1 T cell responses and control of the infection.
