4 Behaviour, Expectations and Rewards
The whole school approach is continued in Year 1. Remember separate kit for after school sport clubs (Monday outdoor/Thursday Indoor) Refer to posters in the classroom

6 Phonics Screening Phonics is used as the building block for developing reading and writing skills. In Year One, we will continue to teach phonics, building upon your child’s learning in Reception and Nursery. At the end of Year One (June) all children are required to complete a phonics screening check to assess their ability to read familiar and unfamiliar words. This test is not supposed to be scary and is completed in familiar surroundings, 1:1 with the class teacher. The aim is to confirm that individual children have learnt phonic decoding and blending skills to an appropriate standard. The pass mark for the screening test is 32 out of 40 and most children are expected to pass it by the end of Year One. If a child does not manage to pass at the end of Year One, they will be given more support in Year Two and can repeat the test at the end of KS1.

7 How to Help Your Child at Home
Play lots of sound and listening games with your child. Read as much as possible with your child Encourage and praise – get them to have a “good guess” Blend the sounds by pointing to each one in turn. Complete phonics homeworks that are sent home App – Reading Eggs, has maths as well

9 Planners/Reading Records
The school has invested in high quality Planners. They include pages to support learning at home and school with relevant resources. We intend to develop the resources within them for next year if they are successful. They provide more tailored support and place reading at home as a high priority for all. The planners also provide organisational information for the week which may support the children and promote independence in remembering PE sessions, After School clubs and Peripatetic lessons for example. The planners can further facilitate communication between home and school but will not be checked daily by the classteacher therefore if a note from home has been added please ensure your child shares this with them. Planners need to transfer between home and school daily. They are designed to last all year. Should a planner get lost, a replacement will need to be purchased from school office, costing £4.00.

10 Guided Reading Reading continues to be a whole school priority as it is a life skill and opens up other areas of the curriculum. Children will have a ‘Class Reader’ which is used as the basis for the Guided Reading session. The text will be appropriate for the year group and will enable specific year group objectives to be taught. There will be one class reader per term but this book will not come home. Children will have two books sent home. The ‘Home Reader’ is monitored weekly by a Teaching Assistant. The text will be selected to match ability. The second book ‘PACER’ (Parents and Children Enjoy Reading) is selected by the child from the Library and is intended to foster a ‘love of reading’ . As the PACER is self selected, the reading level may not directly corralate with their reading ability. We intend to introduce an electronic librarian system during this term. This will allow us to monitor children’s choices and to ensure they are accessing a wide range of texts. More information on this to follow. It is expected in all year groups for children to read at home with an adult at least 3 times per week and for this to be recorded in their planners. House Points will reward those children reading at home each week.

11 Guided Reading Carousel
Guided Reading happens every morning between 9 – 9.30 am . Reading carousel activities could include: Individual reading Book reviews Group reads (TA /teacher) Word level work Spellings Phonics Journal activities/follow up activities Comprehension

12 Spelling Our aim is to continue to improve Spellings in independent writing. Learning Spellings should be a purposeful and meaning exercise that children can then become independent in applying spelling rules. Children will be supported in their learning of word spellings by their patterns and frequency. At the end of each term, we will continue to celebrate spelling success through certificates being presented in a Friday celebration assembly, reflecting how well they have achieved against their year groups spelling rules. In addition to this we will closely monitor the learning, retention and application of the curriculums statutory words. These have been included in Planners and could be used as a resource at home to support spelling. As a result of the feedback from Parents/Carers on the English Homework and Spelling questionnaire last academic year, we have reviewed our systems in order be more effective. Rationale: Spelling remains the most relentlessly tested of all the literacy skills, but it is the least taught. Sending a list of words home one week to then be tested the following week is not teaching effective strategies for learning.

13 Spelling How to help your child:
Use the curriculum newsletter to look at spelling patterns given and encourage your child to include words with the patterns in their home work. They could think of words with that spelling rule in and using the meaning of the word correctly write the word in a sentence. Investigating words supports retention of spelling rules and helps your child to apply the rule to other words. English Homework In KS1, the English homework will communicate the spelling rules that children have been learning in class. Please encourage your child to apply these rules in their writing and look out for examples in reading books. 14 Homework Curriculum/English Homework will be given out on a Monday (Fortnightly) Dates can be found on the handout. One way to support your child will be to use the newsletter to see the grammar, punctuation and spelling we are focusing on during the term and try to encourage your child to use them in their work. To ensure there is a balance of activities, homework will include Writing tasks, Phonics and Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar activities over the course of a half term. Statutory spellings will also be practiced in the morning time along with additional learning of the weeks spelling pattern. Maths Home work is weekly, given out on a Friday and due in the following Wednesday.

16 Website We have recently reviewed our website to make it more efficient and user friendly. Our website and social media platforms will continue to celebrate day to day curriculum experiences and celebrations as well as hosting a wealth of other information and resources to support Parents/Carers. Please take a look and let us know what you think! Please note, we are moving from a weekly newsletter to a monthly one. The core purpose of the new monthly newsletter will be to provide key information on upcoming dates and events. We will continue to celebrate achievements, such as birthdays and classpets but detailed reflections on events will now only feature on the website.

17 Other Lunch and Snack In Year One, all children are eligible for free school dinners and you will have received a letter in July indicating this. Snacks are provided at morning break where children can choose from a range of healthy options: milk, juice, fruit or toast. Water is always available from the water fountain and we encourage parents to provide a named water bottle. Your child’s snack selection will be charged to your ParentPay account which you can top-up online. Letters have been sent out to families who have not yet activated their ParentPay account. Please contact myself or the office if you have any problems with this. Christmas Play Year 1 will be supporting the Christmas Play this year as singers and dancers. Children will be part of the production as we will be doing a Year 1 dance, a letter nearer the time will be given with costume requirements.
