Skins Title Sequence Analysis
Ash Cleverly

This is the first image in the title sequence were introduced to, along with the instrumental track in the background in which skins is well recognised for. The smoke is a brief introduction into what the characters are like e.g. rebels, smokers, like to get into mischief, etc. This shot is highly effective as the smoke is on a black background in order to make the smoke stand out – which could also be a representation of what the characters are like to as many of them aspire to different people, and ant to stand out from the crowd, whether that be in a good or bad way.

This shot is brought upon the screen through lots of moving images, which are all colourful, which can be seen in this screenshot. I thought this could almost represent the characters feelings as the majority of them are what you could call “off the rails” and do drugs, so this could show the hallucination side and the abnormal things that happen to them in day to day life. In this shot, you can also see one of the main characters looking over the city, which gives me the impression that he’s powerful and fearless.

This is the first shot in which were introduced to all of the main characters involved in this series. It is a representation of their power, as all of them are looking down, almost as if they’re looking down on other people – in a metaphorical sense. In this shot, you can tell that the area they’re in isn’t particularly nice as the wall is chipped and the clothes they’re wearing aren’t at all flattering, so could give us the impression that the main genre of the series is a drama as they could get up to mischief.

This shot give a diversity and insight into the different characters involved in the series but also shows us the disaster and troubles some of these teens can get up to. It could be perceived as “social-realism” however at an extreme..and with some added comedy. This is another point at which we can see that this could be an adult comedy/drama, as it involves drinking and drugs, which isn’t appropriate for a much younger audience.

The lighting in this shot can be seen as light yet slightly dull
The lighting in this shot can be seen as light yet slightly dull. This gives a representation of what is yet to come. E.g. at the time, these “lads” think playing on a train track is a good idea, however they could face serious consequences in the long run. It’s clearly showing their rebellious side, and how they are not afraid to do what they want and when they want to do it. However, this could be a slight exaggeration on every day life, as not every single teenager who wants to have fun plays on a train track.

Again, this area looks run down, reflecting on many of the characters emotions. It’s one of the last shots we get to see in the title sequence, however we can see that the two main characters are the two in the middle who are slightly more in front than the others. This implies that they have more dominance over the other characters, and could potentially have more power and say in what goes.

This is the original font that “skins” uses for every single series, making the target audience aware of the unique series style of font. Also, it’s written using sans-serif, meaning its very informal, yet modern as the main characters are all teenagers between the ages of Using the black background makes the writing stand out, as throughout the whole title sequence there are no other pieces of writing, making this the only point at which has writing included.
