Presentation on theme: "Warm-Up #1 Name______________________"— Presentation transcript:

1 Warm-Up #1 Name______________________
Use a software snoop device to measure network traffic on a machine. Student successfully measured some aspect of network traffic. They measured the same thing but changed some one or two variables. The presentation was well organized. There’s a plot or graph presented. The visual information accurately represented what was measured. There should be an indication of the accuracy of your measurements. What’s the uncertain in your values? Are they repeatable? If someone else were to measure the same thing, would they get the same result? There was an in-class delivery and material given to me for further evaluation.

2 Warm-Up #2 Name______________________
Measure the performance of a Network Student successfully measured some aspect of network traffic. S/he measured the same thing several times but changed some one or two variables. There are dependent and independent variables. There’s a plot or graph presented. The visual information accurately represented what was measured. There should be an indication of the accuracy of the measurements. What’s the uncertainty in your values? Are they repeatable? If someone else were to measure the same thing, would they get the same result? How are we to know how much you BELIEVE in your numbers? Several tools are discussed and comparisons made. There was an in-class delivery and material given to me for further evaluation.

Measure the performance of an Application Student successfully measured or simulated some aspect of an application. There’s a plot or graph presented. The visual information accurately represented what was measured. There should be an indication of the accuracy of the results. What’s the uncertainty in your values? Are they repeatable? If someone else were to do the same experiment, would they get the same result? How are we to know how much you BELIEVE in your numbers? Several tools are discussed and comparisons made. There was an in-class delivery and material given to me for further evaluation.

4 Design Proposal Name______________________
Measure the performance of an Application Student successfully presented a report verbally and in writing. Discussion of overview of the project. Performance components you are measuring – simulation, analytical model, experimental measurement. Successes you have had so far. Dead-ends that have been educational.

5 The Main Project Name______________
Deliverable: You will prepare and deliver a 30 minute class presentation. You will also have a written writeup. It’s the written writeup that will be evaluated for a grade. What’s Included: There are a number of items that should be here. They include: A brief reminder of the performance project you are doing. The Performance Engineering techniques/practices you used in completing your project. How those techniques match/differ from those used in class. Successes achieved: a) Portion of the original goal achieved. b) New goals (not originally conceived) that have been accomplished. 5. Difficulties suffered: a) Those difficulties overcome (and how you overcame them). b) Those difficulties causing redirection/blockage. Functionality (how your product works) ONLY to the extent absolutely necessary to explain the performance work you've done. Try to avoid rat-holes please. 7. A description of: a) The performance environment (what was happening on the machine in terms of disk accesses, CPU usage, etc.) b) Performance tools used. c) Performance models employed. A DETAILED explanation of your performance techniques. Remember, it's not what you accomplished, it's how you did it and how it relates to what we've talked about in class that matters. 9. What did you learn from this project? 10. Your report may well have additional topics.
