ANSWER: TRUE! Magnification is required, but a neural trace is a string or network of brain cells linked together for the storage and retrieval of data within the brain.

DENDRITES: “fiber like” extensions from the cells (cell has many of them on the cell body) AXONS: long “tail like” part of neuron cell (each cell has only one) Cells communicate with each other as the axon of one cell makes an electrical connection with the dendrite of another cell

If data is placed in long term memory, it is possible that smelling that perfume will trigger a recall of the historical event that you were studying. Has something like that happened to you???

DATA… Data is recorded in the brain in the form of a series of brain
connections; perhaps thousands of connections for a single thought (called a neural trace). It is STILL not in long term memory – there is nothing keeping the brain cells connected yet.

TRANSFER TO LONG TERM MEMORY
During first 3 hours of sleep, the brain sorts through the information and determines what is important to keep. Cells then fire electrical impulses repeatedly across synapses. During last 3 hours of sleep a sticky substance is secreted into synapses which hardens and secures neural trace together (especially REM sleep).

RESEARCH DONE WITH 2 GROUPS OF STUDENTS…
One group taught an amount of data, then given 6 hours of sleep. Tested when they awoke Did well Second group first given 3 hours of sleep, taught the same information, then given a second 3 hours sleep. Scored much lower than 1st group. Brain couldn’t sort and cement information taught – lost a significant amount of information!

INFLUENCE OF SLEEP ON LEARNING PROCESS
Teens may not feel like they always need 6-8 hours of sleep. They often have ample energy with less. That is unrelated to the process of establishing long-term memory (which requires 6-8 hours of sleep). Indicators suggest that if a student has to review for a test, the two best times are right before he or she goes to bed and right after breakfast.

ANSWER: FALSE! Although a small to moderate amount of stress is good for interest, stress quickly becomes an inhibitor for learning.

A small amount of the right kind of stress is good. Example - Involvement in games/sports that create healthy competition and produces a small amount of adrenaline. Stress and anxiety can quickly become enemies of learning: Anxiety (a form of fear) affects blood flow to brain Directs attention away from class and sends it to the issue causing stress.

Answer: False! Breakfast is VERY important. Brain and body are deprived of glucose after sleep. Best source for glucose in the morning is combination of carbohydrates and protein. Research shows that students who eat balanced breakfast of protein, fat, starch, and sugar perform better.
