A, capsid modifications increase the infectivity of gastric cancer cell lines. Cells were infected with transductionally modified replication-deficient viruses at the indicated viral particles/cell. Luciferase or lacZ activity was measured as relative light units (RLU) 24 hours after infection. Results represent RLU compared to the isogenic control virus with an unmodified serotype 5 capsid, which was given the value of 1. Mean background transgene activity was subtracted from the data. B, to investigate infectivity of nonmalignant cells, 293 human embryonal kidney cells were also analyzed. Columns, mean of triplicates; bars, ±SE (*, P < 0.05; **, P < 0.01; ***, P < 0.001).
