1 Good Morning, Good Afternoon!
Today is Monday, November 27th. Take Out: Pen or pencil Reading book Notebook (Reading Journal) Do Now: Update your book mark Read your book Let’s start with an entry task! You should be finished (or almost) with your book!

2 Entry Task The word compassionate means showing concern or care for others. As you read the response below—add in the analysis that’s missing. Think about how Mrs. Murphy’s words show her being concerned or kind to Carley. Record your thoughts in the lines below. Mrs. Murphy is compassionate. After Mrs. MacAvoy visits, Carley gets upset and says she doesn’t deserve to be with the Murphys. Mrs. Murphy tells her, “You deserve what we have to offer and more…And so much more” (Mullaly Hunt 138). This means that Mrs. Murphy wants Carley to have the best even though Carley can be difficult. This shows compassion because________________________________________________.

3 Words of the Wiser Look for when an older/wiser character tries to help the main character with advice Think to yourself: Why is the wise character saying this? What lesson or theme are they trying to teach the main character? What does it tell us about the characters? For example: When Carley finds out she’s moving back to Vegas, Mrs. Murphy tells her, “‘You know, Carley, if I could talk to your mom, I’d thank her raising such a great person’” (Mullaly Hunt 203). Mrs. Murphy knows that Carley is nervous about reuniting with her mom. She also knows that Carley doesn’t always feel good about who she is, but she wants her to know that she’s special.

4 Reading Time… While you read today, think about how your character has changed. What was he or she like at the beginning? Think about things the character said and did What is he or she like now? Behavior Expectations: Read silently and take notes in your journal Keep your hands and bodies to yourselves. Be ready to share what you find with Ms. Traughber Raise your hand if you have questions.

5 Good Morning, Good Afternoon!
Today is Tuesday, November 28th. Take Out: Pen or pencil Reading book Notebook (Reading Journal) Do Now: Entry Task Update your book mark Read your book Let’s start with Tuesday’s entry task! You should be finished (or almost) with your book!

6 Entry Task The word conflicted means confused or not sure what to choose. As you read the response below—add in the analysis that’s missing. Think about how Carley’s inner thinking show her being confused or not sure what she wants. Carley is conflicted. When she sees her mother for the first time, she thinks to herself, “I want her to know so much—that I love her anyway and hate her at the same time. I want her to know that I want to live with the Murphys forever, but that I’d die without her” (Mullaly Hunt 185). This means  . This illustrates that Carley is conflicted because a person who is conflicted might want two different things at the same time even though they have to make a really difficult choice.

7 Direct Evidence and TLQC
11/28/17 Direct Evidence and TLQC p.______ Direct evidence = a phrase or sentence taken word for word from a text (we sometimes call this a quote) When we introduce direct evidence, we follow the TLQC model T = Transition (using a word or phrase to shift your reader to your direct evidence) L = Lead-in (provides a little info about the evidence) Q = Quote (this is your direct evidence—put quotation marks around it!) C = Citation (make sure you include your citation after your evidence)

8 Reading Time… While you read today, list at least one new trait that your character has or shows. Think about: What does he or she say? What does he or she do? Use these ideas to decide: What is he or she like now? Behavior Expectations: Read silently and take notes in your journal Keep your hands and bodies to yourselves. Be ready to share what you find with Ms. Traughber Raise your hand if you have questions.

10 Entry Task The word resentful means being mad about being treated unfairly. As you read the response below, add the analysis that’s missing. Think about how Daniel’s words show he’s angry about his dad’s expectations about him and sports. Daniel is resentful. While Carley is helping him get better at basketball, Daniel tells Carley, “My name is Daniel Dale Murphy because my father planned, from the time I was born, that I would play baseball. He’s so mad that I don’t. I hate it” (Mullaly Hunt 108). This means that Daniel is angry that his dad won’t accept that Daniel will never be a professional baseball player. This quote suggests Daniel is resentful because__________________________ __________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________.

For example, when Carley discovers that Jimmy Parten has been bugging Michael Eric again, she hangs Jimmy by his overalls from a tree branch and tells him, “Touch a Murphy again---or tell anyone I did this---and I’ll hang you from the gutters next time…I mean it” (Mullaly Hunt 149). This means_______________________________________________________________ __________.
