Family support major factor
Passmores Academy Family support major factor Parental involvement is a significant factor in both accelerated and sustained student academic performance – Loucks (1992) “School age children spend 70% of their waking hours outside of school” “Family participation in education is TWICE as likely to impact on students’ academic success compared to how wealthy the family is.”
9
We have heard it all before!
Passmores Academy We have heard it all before! ‘I revise best last minute’ ‘I can’t revise’ ‘My brother/sister/friend didn’t revise and they got great grades’ ‘My friends aren’t revising – they told me’ ‘I don’t know how to revise’ ‘Having music/TV/my phone helps me to revise’
10
Research Informed Revision
Passmores Academy Research Informed Revision In 2013 there was a major research paper published by Professor John Dunlosky at the University of Kent that looked at what actually works in terms of learning and revision. A group of cognitive psychologists, called the Learning Scientists, have also produced guides on what is the best way to remember things

Research Informed Revision Strategies that work (and some that don’t)
Passmores Academy Research Informed Revision Strategies that work (and some that don’t) Elaboration As a parent/carer using ‘why?’, ‘how do you know?’ and ‘does this link to anything else you have studied? h For example: In science, increasing the temperature can increase the rate of a chemical reaction….why? In geography, the leisure industry in British seaside towns like Porthcawl in South Wales has deteriorated in the last 4 decades….why? In history, the 1929 American stock exchange collapsed. This supported Hitler’s rise to power….why?

Research Informed Revision Strategies that work (and some that don’t)
Passmores Academy Research Informed Revision Strategies that work (and some that don’t) Highlighting words is not learning them Revise as they will be tested – lots and lots of past exam style questions This is far more effective than just reading through/highlighting notes.
13
Research Informed Revision Strategies that work (and some that don’t)
Passmores Academy Research Informed Revision Strategies that work (and some that don’t) Quick recall works Read a section of the exercise/text book/revision guide and write a summary of the key points (without looking back). Then go back and check for accuracy. You can help with this too
14
Research Informed Revision Strategies that work (and some that don’t)
Passmores Academy Research Informed Revision Strategies that work (and some that don’t) Mnemonics and acronyms help Use acronyms to help remember ‘lists’ of things e.g. colours in the spectrum ROYGBIV (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet)
15
Research Informed Revision Strategies that work (and some that don’t)
Passmores Academy Research Informed Revision Strategies that work (and some that don’t) Dual coding Mixing diagrams and words makes things memorable For exampleRead a section of your exercise book (or revision guide) and then put the information into a different format e.g. list, table, spidergram etc.
16
Research Informed Revision Strategies that work (and some that don’t)
Passmores Academy Research Informed Revision Strategies that work (and some that don’t) Spaced practice They cannot revise something once and expect it to stick! The act of remembering helps us to remember easier. This is why revision is not a last minute thing. Revise a topic and then go back to it after a little while – repeat until recall is instant

Research Informed Revision Strategies that work (and some that don’t)
Passmores Academy Research Informed Revision Strategies that work (and some that don’t) We remember first and last best Interleave your revision topics. So instead of revising like this: Revise your topics like this instead:
