16th Meeting of the Working Group of Local Coordinators for Data Transmission
13-14 March 2006 Agenda Item 009 GENEDI V. Tronet 2

Main improvements and limitations version 2.1 Main screen version 2.1 List of datasets covered Open source strategy Update of metadata Conclusions Example of a dataset struture description Quick demo – CIRCA and installation
3
Introduction GENEDI version 2.1 delayed but with major improvements and intensive tests Decision STNE: With eDAMIS approaches (validation engine, conversion module), the need for GENEDI will become limited and no further development will take place. However, GENEDI continues to be supported for existing domains. Attention! Conversion in eDAMIS made at delivery (limit the risks of double conversions)
4
Difficulties linked to GENEDI
GENEDI (Standalone) difficult to support Updated configuration files (code lists) not guarantied GENEDI almost only used in interactive mode (more burden on data senders) Probably delayed or prevented the setting up of true EDI approaches in many Organisations
5
Main improvements and limitations version 2.1
Support Naming Convention (EDI mode) New user interface (tree structure) Easy update of metadata (including new domains) Possibility to couple with GPG Automatic recognition of field separator « GENEDI tag » in GESMES header « Description_Generator.bat » generates dataset structure descriptions (and validation rules)
6
Main screen version 2.1
7
List of datasets covered
Production version: Transport (Air, Rail, Road) Comext LCI Prodcom SBSBD STSxxxx (STSCONS, STSIND, STSOTHER, STSRTD, STSSERV) Test version: MRTM SBSxxxx (SBSCON, SBSMANUF, SBSSERV, SBSTRAD) WASTE Could be tested soon: SBSxxx (SBSBS, SBSCI, SBSINS, SBSPF) Tests stopped: BOP, ECB, ESAFINA, ESAGFS
8
Open source strategy Licence agreement and Installation procedure:
Installation in 3 stages: GENEDI, GZIP, Activeperl Activeperl to be downloaded from Clear display of the licence agreements for each component GENEDI EUPL ASAP Accessibility on Internet: CIRCA without User-ID: « OSS & Statistics » and « EDI & Statistics IG » Immediately accessible under the main page Only one production version (standlone, network common & network user) and one test version Source code, configuration files and documentation on CIRCA: Documentation in PDF, word & RTF format (and html for UML software architecture).
9
Update of metadata Metadata on CIRCA in a dedicated area per Domain:
Users can easily subscribe to their domain(s) of interest Domain Managers can easily maintain their code lists Guaranty of up to date metadata in GENEDI and GESMES structural metadatabase: GESMES support controls updates of code lists GESMES support responsible for updates of dataset structures and validation rules (and structural metadatabase) Quick user guide on how to update metadata: For end users: import new configuration files (or domains) For Domain Managers: update metadata and create new domains/datasets
10
Conclusions GENEDI 2.1 is now stable (thanks to PL, NL, AT, SI and Domain Managers in ESTAT) Concepts of open source and central repository for metadata (GENEDI and GESMES) GENEDI not developed further by Eurostat (but second life possible in the open source community) GENEDI has never been obligatory ! GESMES (EDIFACT) => automatic transmissions
