Primary to secondary Some things to note
2
General things they may struggle with
Primary One teacher that knows them very well Top of the school, know everyone Small space where they know every nook and cranny Very little homework (in comparison) Secondary Lots of teachers and personalities Youngest in school, some know hardly anyone Big space where they may get lost Huge amounts of homework
3
Classroom Primary (ROTJ) Secondary Rows
Pairs of similar ability but then random I can get out of my seat Secondary Group tables (different classes different reasons for groupings) Not expected to be out of seat without permission
4
Lessons Secondary Does your starter set up the whole lesson and give a clear aim of where you are going? Is it a prerequisite or revision… Primary -Start with an anchor task and discuss how to tackle together (set at expected level) - Taught in very small steps and scaffolded for weaker students
5
Lessons Primary Different tasks for different abilities (See examples)
Students self- differentiate Secondary Do you have different tasks or is it differentiated by outcome? Increasingly difficult questions?
6
Thinking books Primary -Students have ‘thinking books’ where they can jot down ideas -Students have a draft book -Self edit lessons Secondary Is the first version, the last version? Do you have a similar structure? This could be quite daunting

My first day to the new school, How will that be
My first day to the new school, How will that be? A lot of older children, They are like giants to me. I am so nervous, What shall I wear? What will they think of me, Should I tie up my hair? How will the teachers be, Will they be kind? What will they teach me, To fill up my mind? I think I will have lots of work It will keep me busy al the time? Do I have to make a poem, With a lot of rhyme? Will there be bad boys, Will there be good? Will I make some friends, Who live in my neighborhood? I will see, And I will grow. Finally I will learn, And I will know. One thing to take away 6 years one way, give them time to adjust
