Representative Images of an Occluded SFA and Corresponding Collateral Vessels (A) Contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance angiogram (MRA) shows a segment of irregular severe narrowing in the distal right superficial femoral artery (SFA) (solid arrow) and complete occlusion of the left superficial femoral artery (solid arrow). Multiple large and small collateral vessels (open arrow) reconstitute the left superficial femoral artery at the level of the adductor canal. Cross-sectional images acquired at the SFA bifurcation in the same patient with (B) time-of-flight (repetition time/echo time = 38 ms/8.7 ms) and (C) proton density weighting (repetition time/echo time = 2,160 ms/5.7 ms) are shown with the corresponding inner (red outlining the lumen) and outer (blue outlining the outer vessel wall) contours. Note that the lack of intravascular signal in the time-of-flight image resulting from the lack of blood flow in the occluded SFA does not compromise the ability to quantify the wall lumen and wall areas.
