CAUSATIVE We use the causative in English to say that we have arranged for someone to do something for us. He had his jacket cleaned. (He didn't clean it himself.)

MAIN CAUSATIVE VERBS – ACTIVE VOICE MAKE (forced – make + base verb: she made me wash the dishes LET (gave permission) – let + base verb: my dad let me go by myself. HAVE (requested/asked) – have+base verb: he had the students do the assignement. GET (convinced/persuaded) – get + to verb: she got me to mow the lawn. HELP (aided) – The teacher helped me improve/to improve my English.

MAIN CAUSATIVE VERBS – PASSIVE VOICE SUBJECT + CAUSATIVE VERB + OBJECT + VERB (PAST PARTICIPLE) + AGENT (OPTION) Have – I had my hair cut./ I had my homework done. Get – I got my car fixed. (more informal) Yesterday, my car broke down. I had it fixed (by a mechanic). / I got it fixed (by a mechanic). My hair is too long! You should have/get your hair cut. (modal)

CAUSATIVE We also use 'have something done' to talk about an unpleasant experience. Peter had his phone stolen last night.

LET’S CHECK IT OUT! Jack washed his car. (He did the action. It’s not a causative form) Jack had his son wash his car. (He asked his son to do it. It IS a causative form – active voice) Jack had his car washed by his son – passive voice)

LET’S CHECK IT OUT! We will paint our house. We will have Jack paint our house. We will have our house painted.
