Menstral Hygiene Management
MHM scale up operational research projects were trialled in Somaliland, Madagascar and Uganda between 2014 – 2015, funded by the Humanitarian Innovation Fund and British RC. Compared to baseline survey results from 2014, there has been a marked positive change in the beneficiaries’ knowledge on menstruation across the three countries Improvements in dignity, hygiene and reduction in reported cases of itching were also reported in all three countries after distribution of the MHM Kits – e.g. there was also an overall 19% reduction in reported cases of itching or irritation from all respondents in Somaliland one month after distribution.

Menstrual Hygiene Management
The findings from Uganda, Somaliland and Madagascar also highlighted that effectively addressing MHM requires provision of appropriate infrastructure, including safe and private spaces for maintaining hygiene, washing, drying and changing pads. The learnings from the initial pilot and scale-up MHM projects are currently been translated into real emergencies for the current Tanzania and Rwanda emergency population movement appeals, supporting Burundi refugees in Nyarugusu and Mahama camps respectively.
