Different Breeds

-The U.S. took more than 30 dog breeds when they started but later narrowed it to German Shepherds, Beligian Sheep Dogs, Doberman Pinschers, Farm Collies, and Giant Schnauzers. -The British used dogs like Asatians, Doberman Pinschers, Big Airdales, and Rottweilers. -It was also discovered that mix breed dogs worked better than purebreds. They were more quiet, dependable, and rugged.

Training of Dogs

-First dogs went through basic training where they learned simple commands like heel, sit, down, come, and stay. They also started to learn how to crawl. -Next they went through advanced training. There they learned how to climb, jump over things, and crawl quicker. Some learned how to parachute. One thing that was hard to teach dogs was not to fear gunfire. -Also in training dogs learned to get used to muzzles, gas masks, and riding in vehicles.

Age and Size Ranges for Dogs

-A dog had to weigh 50 pounds or more, and it had to be at least 20 inches tall. Dogs also had to be from 1-5 years old.

Jobs of Dogs

-There was 3 main types of jobs for dogs: the sentry dogs, messenger dogs, and scout or patrol dogs.
-The sentry dogs worked in the dark to prevent enemies coming from behind. They were trained to go with guards on patrol and warn them of an approach. They would growl or bark to warn the guards.

-The messenger dogs had to be loyal and trustworthy
-The messenger dogs had to be loyal and trustworthy. They were trained to travel silently and they had to be able to find and use natural cover. -Their job was to carry messages held in a hollow capsule on their collar. They went from one place to the next.

-The scout or patrol dogs had all the skills of the sentry dogs, but they had to work quietly. They were used for ambushes and detection of snipers.

Additional Info

-Many dogs got awards, and there was even a Disney movie made called, “Chips the War Dog,” about a helpful dog. -All dogs had to go through civilian training before they went home. -The U.S. used dogs in other wars, like Vietnam.
