FY1 FY2 (Step 2: Group matching) For example Oxford: BUCKS OUH MKH FRIMLEY RBH

16 Step 3: specific programme (jobs)
Things to think about when choosing jobs Locations Clinical exposure – general medical/surgical jobs vs specialties 3 month vs 4 month blocks On calls / weekends What you actually like / what you would like to do in the future Preparing for each job What is expected of you (In my experience) – good to have general jobs in F1 to gain experience, understand systems. More complex/specialty jobs in F2

17 Example jobs

18 WHAT JOBS MEAN Medical jobs Surgical jobs
Other jobs – public health, micro, palliative Community jobs – GP, geriatrics, psychiatry, GUM Academic placement

19 TERMINOLOGY / other GENERAL INFO
Working hours Time included for handover On calls – extra hours worked usually in the evening, 5-9/10 – ward cover Nights + weekends vary job to job ‘The take’, post-take, clerking shifts Linking applications – only same foundation school, not same trust or programme

20 My experience (Ramiro)
Acute General Medicine – 6 months Social Well supported Busy Varied – ward cover, acute take, different clinical scenarios, chronic conditions, acutely unwell. Discharge summaries and TTOs, usually delegated to FY1. Orthogeriatrics/ Surgical Emergency Unit Less social. Less senior support around as usually in theatres. Need to know medicine Usually little opportunity for theatre time (within contracted hours) – ?orthogeriatrics exception. Discharge summaries and TTOs, usually delegated to FY1. Possibly less busy than medicine

21 Jobs and future career Valuable experience – procedures log, topic for interview, etc. Confirmation if it’s for you or not… Networking Application and portfolio advice Points when applying for core training Ideally FY2. However think of timeline for CT application However, not essential… Taster week!

22 Jobs and money Banded vs un-banded Banded supplements:
On-calls (extra and unsocial hours) Night shifts Weekends Example for FY1: Post-tax AGM pcm ~£2000 Post-tax psychiatry pcm ~£1500 Example for FY2: Basic salary: £31,422 (un-banded) A&E rotation: £45,827 Others in-between

23 Extra bits AFP stand-alone FY2 job opportunity – FS dependent.
Education opportunities (Attachment to Universities) Think about exams (MRCP/MRCS) and timings of rotations Taster week, study leave

24 More information Messly – articles on specific Foundation Schools and links to GMC feedback UKFP Applicant’s Handbook Recruitment Facts and Stats Report Specific Foundation Schools websites - includes range of points and areas
