The contributor also acknowledges and accepts that this contribution may be made public by IEEE Patent Policy and Procedures: The contributor is familiar with the IEEE 802 Patent Policy and Procedures < ieee802.org/guides/bylaws/sb-bylaws.pdf>, including the statement "IEEE standards may include the known use of patent(s), including patent applications, provided the IEEE receives assurance from the patent holder or applicant with respect to patents essential for compliance with both mandatory and optional portions of the standard." Early disclosure to the Working Group of patent information that might be relevant to the standard is essential to reduce the possibility for delays in the development process and increase the likelihood that the draft publication will be approved for publication. Please notify the Chair as early as possible, in written or electronic form, if patented technology (or technology under patent application) might be incorporated into a draft standard being developed within the IEEE Working Group. If you have questions, contact the IEEE Patent Committee Administrator at Sabine Demel, T-Mobile

2 May 2005 Abstract This document contains the IEEE – 3GPP liaison report for May 2005. Sabine Demel, T-Mobile

3 3GPP Overview May 2005 What is 3GPP? Scope:
doc.: IEEE /0460r0 May 2005 3GPP Overview What is 3GPP? The 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) is a collaboration agreement (established in December 1998), which brings together a number of telecommunications standards bodies (from around the world) currently ARIB, CCSA, ETSI, ATIS, TTA, and TTC More information on Scope: Develop the 3rd Generation (3G) Mobile System and its capabilities are in a phased approach (currently start of Release-7) UTRAN (including UTRA; W-CDMA in Frequency Division Duplex (FDD) mode and TD-CDMA in Time Division Duplex (TDD) mode) 3GPP Core Network (Third Generation networking capabilities evolved from GSM . These capabilities include mobility management and global roaming.) Terminals for access to the above (including specifications for a UIM (User Identification Module)) System and service aspects Maintain and develop the Global System for Mobile communication (GSM) Technical Specifications including evolved radio access technologies (e.g. General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) and Enhanced Data rates for GSM Evolution (EDGE)) Sabine Demel, T-Mobile Sabine Demel, T-Mobile
