Think about it … When you eat out with a group, how do you choose where to go? When faced with a more important decision, we want God’s input … what is His will? In those cases, our decision making process should not be as arbitrary as how to choose a restaurant. You should seek to align your will with God’s will.
4
Listen for what God has done for us.
Ephesians 1:4-6 (NIV) For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight. In love 5 he predestined us to be adopted as his sons through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will-- 6 to the praise of his glorious grace, which he has freely given us in the One he loves.
5
Chosen by God’s Will What words and phrases describe the actions God took for our lives. What was God’s goal in bringing anyone into His family? What do we have to praise God for?
6
Chosen by God’s Will God is making us holy and blameless
Holy in His Sight Holy in Our Practice Christ took our punishment We confess, repent of sin We receive salvation by faith God imputes us with Christ’s holiness God’s Holy Spirit lives within the believer Holy Spirit motivates us Enables a life of holiness Lives out Fruit of the Spirit Separates us from world, unto God Gifts us for service, ministry
7
Use your imagination … You have just received an official letter from the White House The president knows of your job skills He has a specific task for you involving a recent hurricane recovery
8
Chosen by God’s Will Now consider what we read in the passage that God chose you as a part of His plan before the foundations of the world. Ignoring your particular political leanings how would you feel? What are ways you can respond to God when you begin to understand this reality? How should knowing that you were chosen to be in the family of God affect your involvement in evangelism?
9
Listen for the mysteries of God’s wisdom.
Romans 11:33-36 (NIV) Oh, the depth of the riches of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable his judgments, and his paths beyond tracing out! 34 "Who has known the mind of the Lord? Or who has been his counselor?"
10
Listen for the mysteries of God’s wisdom.
"Who has ever given to God, that God should repay him?" 36 For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be the glory forever! Amen.
11
God’s Sovereign Will What could Paul not help but do as he thought about God’s unfolding of His plan of salvation? What three rhetorical questions did Paul ask? What is the implied answer to each? Why is it significant that we can’t fully comprehend the ways of God?
12
God’s Sovereign Will What does this hymn of praise reveal about God’s nature? In what ways do we underestimate God?
13
Listen for how to respond to God.
Romans 12:1-2 (NIV) Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God--this is your spiritual act of worship. 2 Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is--his good, pleasing and perfect will.
14
God Reveals As We Surrender
What are the appeals Paul made in these verses? On what basis did he make them? How does transformation occur? How does the Christian become different from unbelieving people?
15
God Reveals As We Surrender
What three words did Paul use to describe God’s will? How does presenting your body as a living sacrifice help you discern God’s will for your life? How does being transformed by the renewing of your mind help you discern God’s will for your life?
16
Application Praise. Praise God for His love and mercy.
Thank Him for working in your life.
17
Application Sometimes it’s easier to see the purposes of God by looking in the rearview mirror. Look back on key moments in your life and consider how God was at work in each of those situations. Make a list of your findings as a reminder that God is at work even though you may not fully understand how.
18
Application Share. Share with your group or a close Christian friend ways the world is trying to conform your thinking. Pray together that your minds would be renewed in the ways of God.
19
Family Activities Yes, I know you’d rather do the crossword … but there’s a good quote here. As grandma used to say, “Use your noggin.” And if you get stuck, you can go to There’s some other good family stuff there too.
