How LDS Business College uses LabSim to encourage “Deep Learning” Spencer DeGraw Program Chair – Cybersecurity July 10, 2019

3 How does LDS Business College define Deep Learning?
Subject Matter Immersion Theoretical understanding is never enough…… Especially in IT! Immersion means letting the students be involved in designing and defining their own learning experiences

4 What is the Educator’s Dilemma?
Adam Keys

5 Teach to the Exam? Teach to the Job? Educator’s Dilemma

10 The in-class projects matter
Sometimes the exploration is as valuable as the end result. Sometimes more. We don’t always worry that they got everything working. We don’t always require a specific end result. Sometimes we let the students decide what the end result will be. We give them a general direction and see where the students go. This often provides valuable experiences for both those students who want to push their limits as well as those who are just sliding by. (Not a “one size fits all” approach)

13 The Deep Learning happens in the classroom
Some discussion Hands-on Projects Little more discussion More Projects Continue with Projects

14 Sample Projects – Network Pro
Introduction to Virtualization Setup a server running ESXi from VMWare Allow the students to login to the ESXi box and each student builds a Windows 10 VM Peer-to-Peer networking Students create one large workgroup ensuring they are all on the same subnet Share a silly file with the Workgroup Introduction to NMAP Setup an environment with multiple networking devices Ask the students to discover my network using NMAP (ZenMAP)

15 Sample Projects – Security Pro
Explore Kali Linux Using VMWare Workstation (or dedicated ESXi box) each student installs KALI linux. Explore the different tools inside of KALI, select one or two and do a class demonstration on how it works. Introduce IDS Using dedicated ESXi box, each student installs a VM of either Windows or Linux A pre-installed VM of AlienVault is already running. Students need to connect to AlienVault and figure out how to install a HIDS on their VM. Requires network troubleshooting, etc.

16 Students install their own software and make it work
