Environment? Dry climate; rainfall was rare How did environment affect their culture? Developed an irrigation system to water corn crops, and performed rain dances to the spirits to encourage rainfall.

Their surroundings’ influence? Sandstone brick was made out of clay found in the area. It kept the inside of the house cool against the hot temperatures outside.

Environment? Grassy area that stretched from the Mississippi River to the Rocky Mountains How did environment affect their culture? They were nomads, following buffalo around the Plains. Their entire way of life revolved around the use of the buffalo.

Their surroundings’ influence? Since they were nomads, their dwellings needed to be easy to transport and set up. Teepees were made of buffalo hide.

Environment? Wooded areas on the East Coast, including Long Island and New York. Fertile soil was abundant. How did environment affect their culture? They hunted woodland animals such as deer and moose. They planted crops such as corn, beans, and squash.

Their surroundings’ influence? Built longhouses (Iroquois) and wigwams (Algonquin), both made from trees. The logs kept the inside of the dwellings warm.
