1 Choosing a subject for your positive – negative space painting.
Your image should contain both positive space and negative space. Your image should work as a silhouette and have details, since you will be drawing both. Your subject needs to contain more than one item. Even if your image is arranged in one way, consider drawing the arrangement in another way (repeating the subject, drawing it on the diagonal, overlapping objects, etc.)

2 These would not be good subject
choices. Single item If they were converted to a silhouette, the would be unrecognizable.

3 This tree could be made into
a silhouette. However, for the detail side, it will be difficult to draw because the leaves all blend Together. This tree is a better choice. It will work as a silhouette, and the details can be drawn easily. Plus, the point of view is different and interesting.

4 Original and interesting subject choice,
but, again, this picture will look like circles on the silhouette side, versus jellfyfish This is a better choice. However, you might consider rearranging the jellyfish so there is more space between them on paper.

5 Too Crowded Good silhouette choice, may be difficult to draw the detail side because they can’t be seen. Only one item

6 Flowers don’t have enough negative space.
Much better choice.

7 Be careful with landscapes.
this will be recognizable as a silhouette, however it will be very boring as a composition. Plus, it will be somewhat difficult to draw on the detail side without it looking very elementary.
