3 Last lesson we were looking at how Dickens used language and structural techniques to emphasise the fact that Marley was dead at the start of the story. In announcing a death at the start of the story and in his use of a range of interesting techniques, Dickens successfully created an engaging opening to a story. He used A short sentence for dramatic effect A list to emphasise the finality of the situation. Repetition to confirm a position. Lexical repetition to convey a message.
