2 Why me? Leadership is not defined by position
Leadership is a skill set that can be built and changed over time Introduction of presentation team Stephanie Rochelle Sean Why me?

3 “Leadership is not about title, position, or flow charts it is about one life influencing another” John Maxwell Why Me Rochelle to talk about the bus: someone has to be the driver, someone has to be navigator, someone has to be the cheerleader to get everyone on the bus, the tires, the passengers, the engine, the windows, the oil, the gas, etc… it takes everyone working TOGETHER for everyone to move forward toward the goal.

4 In order to have an impact on the biggest areas we have we have to identify them:
Why Me Why Now

Are the results static or can they changes How does this help build our leadership skills? Who am I

8 What can I control Attitude
Attitude of the leader is key to forward momentum. Shackelton’s expedition to Antarctica Shackelton is known as a great leader, even though his journey was a complete failure. They never made it to Antartica. The Endurance set sail in August 2014, and in January 1915, the ship became trapped among packed ice. Even though the trip had not gone as planned, he kept routines for the men. Battling high anxiety, disengagement, and pessimism, he drew the men closer to each other through nightly after dinner interaction with one another and through daily routines. June 1915 the Endurance started to break apart and Shackleton ordered all them men of the boat and to make camp on the ice. He kept the men’s focus on the future. The previous plans were irrelevant, his new goal was to get the men home safely. He had skeptics in the camp, and those men were invited to stay in his tent, keeping a close eye on them as to save the morale for the group. This group of men went through 2 years of uncertainty, danger, facing death and with the guidance of a great leader survived such harsh conditions. Shackleton took full responsibility for the mission and for the men. What can I control

9 What can I control Project Management
As we spoke about Shackleton, his project or mission was constantly changing. The overall mission was to get to Antarctica and back home, so the end result was always to make it home safely. However, over the course of 2 years, there were many projects that needed to be managed. Shackleton took the men’s strengths and weaknesses into account to assign them tasks to accomplish the good of the group. A good leader will not just manage a project themselves and then dictate it out, they will use the resources around them along with identifying the strengths and weaknesses of the members of the group to best delegate tasks so that the project can move in a forward momentum toward the goal. What can I control

12 Separate your skills from your position and know your position
Content expert How can we find areas where we can succeed What skills can I build

13 What skills can I build Understand the room and the people
Emotional intelligent Emotional Control Words have meaning(even if not the intent) What skills can I build Understand the audience and how they process and problem solve when presenting new information. I work with PT’s, PTA’s, OT’s and SLP. The nature of personalities for those professions are soo different. My analogy when thinking of how the different professions process: if facing a woods and the goal is on the other side: PT’s will just go forward, facing whatever obstacles as they come with very little questions. OT’s they want to know what every tree’s role is in between, what equipment we will be taking, and need an itinerary of every detail to get to goal, and will need to review the plan a couple of times. SLP’s: they want to decorate the trees on the way and will make sure that all the people around them are happy and having a good time along the way.

14 What skills can I build Know the decision makers and process
Is your boss the point of decisions Can you have influence over the Time of the decision? Can you influence the Resources that are needed? Can you influence the Requirements that are needed? This is a big one right now for the PT/PTA team, how? Can you have a back up plan? Be a watch maker, not a time teller What skills can I build

15 Have realistic expectations
