The British gained control of India in the 18th and 19th centuries
Before British control India was loosely ruled by the Moghul Empire The majority of the country was Hindu, but the Moghuls were Muslim The Moghuls had very loose control over India, with large territories run almost entirely by their local princes British control over India was begun by the British East India Company The corporation gained control of all European trade with India Over a period of 100 years ( ) the East India Company conquered and ran large portions of India

The British government directly ruled India from 1857 to 1947, a period called the British raj
The British government took control in response to an Indian rebellion against the rule of the East India Company Caused in part by religion: Hindu soldiers working for the EIC were told that their ammunition was packed in beef fat, Muslim soldiers were told that it was pig fat British rule had both positive and negative effects in India: Positive Effects Negative Effects Improved agriculture reduced famine Outlawed Indian industry to provide markets for British goods Introduced the idea of democracy Encouraged conflict between religious groups Built infrastructure (example: railroads) Pulled raw materials and taxes out of India Eliminated suttee (bride burning) and thuggee (highway robberies and killings) Did not allow Indians to administer their own country
