2 Root words are the parts of words on which affixes are added.
Root Words and Affixes Root words are the parts of words on which affixes are added. Although the endings can change when adding a suffix, root words can stand alone as words. Nation Examples of Root Words Cycle Normal Honest HONEST JOHN’S RE-DEPLOYED AUTOMOBILES

3 Prefixes are placed at the beginning of a word to change its meaning.
Example ab– ambi– anti– not, or away from both against abnormal ambivalent antimatter bene– bi– dis– good two not beneficial bicycle dishonest inter– intra– un– between within international intranet uncooked

4 Suffixes are placed at the end of a word to change its meaning.
Example –able –ation –est capable of the process of most fixable creation largest –ful –ish –less full of like without beautiful childish hopeless –logy –ly –ous the study of in a way or manner having qualities of mineralogy happily joyous Prefix

5 Guided Practice with Root Words and Affixes
Add a prefix and suffix to your partner’s name. Then write a definition for the new word you created and a sentence to show how to use it. Example 1: dismarkous — not having the qualities of Mark When my brother and I used to play with building blocks, he was dismarkous. I would stack the blocks five feet high, and he would knock them down with one blow. Example 2: presandraize — do what Sandra would do ahead of time I love organizing parties with my friends. My friends love it too because I presandraize. So, when they come over, I have done everything, and they just sit back and relax. Refer to the list of prefixes and suffixes on the following slide.
