The formation of an accessory limb requires three components: a lateral wound in the upper limb, a nerve deviated to the wound, and a skin graft from the opposite (in this case, posterior) side. Nerve deviation converts skin wound healing to blastema formation, whereas juxtaposition of anterior and posterior tissues provides positional information for blastemal patterning and outgrowth of an accessory limb. Nerve-derived BMP/FGF signals, anterior FGF signal, and posterior SHH signal are required in these processes. Artwork by A. Dickson.
