5 Deadlines Date by which the scholarship application is due to be considered Know if the application has to be in the actual possession of the scholarship committee or postmarked by the due date Very important to keep track of a scholarship deadline to keep yourself eligible for consideration Deadlines are VERY important! You cannot turn in a scholarship past the deadline as you will not even be considered. This is where staying organized and staying on top of the scholarship process is so important. Many students miss out on scholarships just because they do not complete their application on time.

6 How will it be decided who receives a scholarship?
Decided by a sponsoring individual, family, committee, scholarship foundation board Sponsors will establish priorities for selection based on the purpose and values of the sponsor For example, an American Legion scholarship may establish priorities based on service to the community and patriotism Scoring of the application or essay based on a rubric Giving personal examples if you have been on a scholarship committee is helpful. You can let students know what they look for. Ex: Having a typed application, make sure you have correct punctuation, etc.

7 How do you find scholarships?
There are literally thousands of scholarships out there. These are a few trusted sites where you can find scholarships. Remember: Not all scholarships are going to apply to you. Scholarships take a lot of time and research. Start early!

8 Other Sources of Scholarships
School Counselor Student or Parent Place of Employment Church or religious organizations Local businesses School Counselor: That is what they are there for! School counselors should have a list of scholarships they are aware of. They can help you figure out what scholarships might be best suited for you. Student or parent place of work: How many students work at Hy-Vee? Great example of a company that gives out thousands of dollars in scholarships to high school seniors. Parents place of work is another great place to check.  Church or religious organizations: Great place to check Local businesses: Research local businesses. Several local businesses give out scholarships to high school seniors.

9 Checking for Understanding
The scope of a scholarship is how much in scholarship you might receive. True False False – scope is how big an area will a scholarship application draw from like national, state, regional, local, school district Scholarship deadlines are just suggested dates to submit an application but they really don’t affect whether you get the scholarship. True False Absolutely False!!!!! You must pay great attention to deadlines for scholarship applications. If you turn in the application late, you will be eliminated from consideration. Make sure you know if the application has to be in the office of the scholarship organization or physically in the office.

10 Checking for Understanding
A scholarship application lists an ACT composite score as 21, but if you have a score of 20, you will probably get the scholarship anyway. True False False - be sure to review the criteria listed for a scholarship to make sure you meet the criteria. If you do not meet any or all of the criteria listed, you won’t get the scholarships.

11 Checking for Understanding
All scholarships are based on financial need, so unless you are poor, don’t bother to apply. True False False!!!!! Scholarships can be based on need, merit, or both. Many scholarships do not consider financial need. Definitely apply for scholarships for which you qualify. Merit means you have a quality or skill that someone wants to reward with scholarship money. Financial need takes into consideration the financial income and assets of a student/family.

18 Finishing with Scholarships
Write a thank you to the sponsoring person, family, organization Complete any paperwork to make sure the scholarship money goes to your college If you change colleges at semester, make sure to inform the scholarship organization Here are some good suggestions on applying scholarships from the ICAN website: Thank you notes- VERY important! Some organizations have stopped giving scholarships to students just because they never receive a thank you letter. Therefore, they are left thinking that the scholarship they have given out really isn’t making a difference. Don’t forget to do this!  Paperwork- Often times there will be paperwork associated with scholarships. Make sure you get all of the paperwork needed turned in on time.  Our website offers some great resources and tips for students. Make sure you utilize our website to help with this entire process.
