1 Building progressions for accuracy and tactical awareness

2 Progression From simple to difficult From closed to open skill
Closed Skill Action / Technique of striking may be described as a closed skill

3 Open Skill An open skill is ‘To apply a movement which is technically sound for a particular action and which is an integral part but NOT the whole part of the skill e.g. Where the situation is changing requiring the player to Read the opponents actions (PERCEPTION) Make a DECISION as to what they will do i.e. starting to move towards where they will time the ball Strike the ball accurately to the chosen target (ACTION)

4 Squash players may be proficient in striking the ball but lack the skill in an open rally because they do not recognise the right opportunity to make a good decision and to then use their technique. When progressing from closed to open skill we gradually increase the shot options and size of the court thus increasing the use of PERCEPTION – DECISION – ACTION (PDA-Cycle) How long do we stay in a closed skill routine? As short as possible, but as long as necessary.

5 When do we move to the next level of a progression?
After a set time After a set number of shots After a set number of rallies (scoring) When the coach decides (0-100)

6 When do we as coaches decide to move to the next level?
Definitely before the players start feeling bored. Not before, they have reached a relaxed rhythm. As soon as they start looking for the “short cuts”

7 How do we train accuracy?
Setting targets - on the floor - on the front wall Encouraging attacking shots against loose (inaccurate) shots This option combines accuracy with tactical awareness = understanding the WHEN and WHY to play a shot & training the use of attacking and defensive options, PERCEPTION, DECISION, ANTICIPATION, DOT distance/opportunity/time
