Mesopotamia was a river valley civilization in the Fertile Crescent that was settled by the Sumerians. The Sumerians developed city-states throughout Mesopotamia. These independent cities were governed by dynasties. In a dynasty, political control is passed down from father to son. The writing method made up of pictograms that was used in Mesopotamia was cuneiform. Eventually Mesopotamia was taken over by the Babylonian Empire. This empire took political control of Mesopotamia, and implemented a new law code. The Code of Hammurabi was then used to govern the people of the Babylonian Empire. Hunter-gatherer societies existed during the Paleolithic Era, also known as the Old Stone Age. Hunter-gatherers are groups of people whose survival depended on finding wild plants and animals. One characteristic of the Paleolithic era is being nomadic which means moving around in order to find food. Another characteristic of their lifestyle is that hunter-gatherers invented the first simple tools which allowed them to hunt. They also lived in groups of people known who moved around together known as clans. Early humans even created cave art which gives archaeologists an understanding of their life.
