1 16 02: OUTLINE 20 GCSEart&designexamination
Outline, as well as other linear qualities, is sometimes used as a design elements by artists, craftspeople and designers. Patrick Caulfield used flat areas of colour and bold outlines, often depicting interiors and still life arrangements. Graphic designer Franco Grignani has created many distinctive logo designs using outline. Inscribed linear designs are notable features in traditional Nigerian pottery and in the ceramic work of Lucie Rie. Photographer Matthias Hoch is inspired by the outlines seen in contemporary architecture and textile artist Anni Albers is known for using linear outline qualities in her geometric designs for weaving. Research appropriate sources and create your own work in response to Outline.

2 PATRICK CAULFIELD GCSEart&design2015/16 painter Key Stage 4
English painter and printmaker. He began his studies in 1956 at Chelsea School of Art, London, continuing at the Royal College of Art (1960–63), one year below the students identified as originators of Pop Art. In the early 1960s Caulfield's painting was characterised by flat images of objects paired with angular geometric devices or isolated against unmodulated areas of colour. He adopted the anonymous technique of the sign painter, dispensing with visible brushwork and distracting detail and simplifying the representation of objects to a basic black outline in order to present ordinary images as emblems of a mysterious reality PATRICK CAULFIELD

Franco Grignani (Pieve Porto Morone, Milan, 1999) was a designer, painter and Italian architect. He participated in events of the second Futurist movement and his geometric abstraction was closely linked to Constructivism. His interests in optical vision led to him developing analytical research in photography and experimenting with photograms, photomontage and graphic overlays.

Lucie Rie ( ), one of the 20th century's most celebrated and iconic potters, combined an acute understanding of modernism with the skills of her chosen craft. During the course of her sixty-year career, she continually honed and refined her work, developing new shapes and surface effects that were distinctly her own. Her delicately shaped bowls, bottles, and other vessels reflect her commitment to simplicity and clarity of form, earning her both critical and popular acclaim. LUCIE RIE

9 GCSEart&design2015/16 MATTHIAS HOCH painter Key Stage 4
Matthias Hoch (1958, Dresden) comes from the strong tradition of architectural photography, a tradition as long as that of photography itself. Based in Leipzig he has been exploring the ubiquitous formal language of modern European urban development. Through his images of buildings, interiors, exteriors and details he views the built object as social art, reflecting a concrete historical situation. Objects, be they buildings or office chairs, are observed precisely and with a keen sense of surface. The views he presents seem virtually impossible to localize.
