Employers and Researchers value the same competencies
Researchers often think employers would not value the competencies they have. When both employers and r-rs were asked to list rank their competencies that they believe they have, they were broadly similar. Problem solving, research skills, and technical/subject expertise were all ranked highly.

Duration 2 years Success rate 20% in Ireland, 14% in Europe Very competitive salary around (circa €3,000 in your hand, more if you have family) You can delay your starting date You need to physically move to the country of your supervisor's institution in EU or a H2020 associated country If you really want to have your research in Ireland there is an option for you called Global Fellowship

Third Level Graduate Scheme
Allows all non-EEA graduates of Irish universities to remain in Ireland after their studies Helps finding graduate level employment and applying for a work permit/hosting agreement You can work full time or part time without any permission under this scheme Note: if you meet qualification criterial for a work permit or a job under Hosting Agreement straight away (offer for min 2 years !) – do not choose the Graduate Scheme

Third Level Graduate Scheme
Rules Notification in writing that you have achieved your student award in Ireland (a letter from the university, or the degree scroll)- to GNIB You must have a current, valid Stamp 2 student immigration permission and an up-to-date GNIB (now IRP card) holders of stamp 1 are not eligible (you can not use it after working on a hosting agreement/work permit under stamp 1) You must apply within 6 months after achieving the award :BSc, MSc, PhD You must not have already exceeded the 7 year limit on your permission as a non-EEA national student in Ireland You can enter the Programme on 2 separate occasion only You will be granted stamp 1G on the Third Level Programme – report to your local GNIB before your stamp 2 expires

Third Level Graduate Scheme
Graduates with BSc or higher diploma (level 8 on the NFQ) can be granted 12 months residence max You can not exceed 7 years in total on your stamp 2 and your stamp 1G Graduates with MSc, post graduate diploma or PhD (level 9 on the NFQ) can be granted 24 months residence you can not exceed 8 years in total on your stamp 2 and your stamp 1G NOTE Initial permit for 12 months - then extension- up to 8 year limit – on conditions you make an effort to get graduate level employment (job interview, signing up with graduate employment agencies..)

General Work Permit General Work Permit
You can stay in Ireland and work under work permit if salary offered is €32K pa, all occupations are eligible (note list of ineligible occupations) Min is €27K pa if you graduated in the last 12 months, and has been offered a graduate position from the Highly Skilled Eligible Occupations List Highly Skilled Eligible Occupations List The list incudes : Engineering and Science, ICT professionals, Academics and Business /Research admin staff etc.. A Labour Market Needs Test is required in most cases (Highly Skilled Occupations are excluded) You have to stay n the job for 12 months (not eligible for shorter contract offers) The main attraction of the General Employment Permit for prospective candidates is that it permits a broader range of occupations than the other classes of employment permit

Critical Skills Employment Permit
Critical Skills Work Permit Designed to attract highly skilled people into the labour market with the aim of encouraging them to take up permanent residence in Ireland Occupations such as ICT professionals, professional engineers and technologists are catered for under this type of employment permit. The list of eligible occupations is set out in the Highly Skilled Eligible Occupations List. Jobs with a minimum annual salary of €30,000 for a restricted number of strategically important occupations in the Highly Skilled Eligible Occupations List qualify All occupations with a minimum annual salty of over €62K pa qualify Job offer must be for min 2 years, you must stay in the job for min 12 months a Labour Market Needs Test is not required Permit holders can apply for immediate family reunification Spouses work without any permit – all jobs qualify

New immigration Policy : Rights to work for spouse of Hosting Agreement Holders
Spouses and De Facto Partners of Hosting Agreement holders no longer need to apply for a work permit if they want to work in Ireland Your local GNIB visit with your spouses/ de facto partner who is a resident in Ireland on a Hosting Agreement – 1G stamp condition given No charge if IRP is still valid (if due for renewal €300) Spouses of stamp 4 holders on the basis of being a former Hosting Agreement holder – also qualify

Stamp 1G holders/de facto partners of Hosting Agreement holders
have rights to work on full or part time basis without a work permit do additional voluntary work study travel abroad for short periods (e.g. holidays and attending conferences) and return to Ireland, subject to any re-entry visa requirements bring immediate children to Ireland The permission to stay in Ireland is still tied to the permission of the Hosting Agreement holder Stamp 1G holders – are not entitled to rely on public services or claim any state benefits/funding and must hold private medical insurance Stamp 1G period is reckonable for naturalisation/long term residence

Who is a de facto partner ?
The applicant must be in a position to provide evidence of: a genuine, long-term, durable relationship, living with their de facto partner as a family unit for at least two years prior to the commencement of this scheme. More info on INIS website:

A new pre-clearance procedure for de facto partners
If you intend to travel to Ireland for the purpose of joining your De Facto Partner who holds a Hosting Agreement (or CSEP), you must apply for immigration preclearance to enter the State before you travel to Ireland. This scheme applies to both non-visa required and visa required nationals. A non-refundable fee of €100 applies For info; INIS web:

A new pre-clearance procedure for de facto partners
Medical Insurance Applicants must be covered by private medical insurance, from a company authorised by the Health Insurance Authority for the duration of your time in the State. Travel insurance may suffice but only during the first year of your stay provided it covers you: For the full period before you arrange private medical insurance At a minimum of €25,000 for accident and €25,000 for illness and disease and For any period of hospitalisation In addition, it is advisable that applicants have insurance to cover repatriation in the event of serious illness or unforeseen events.

How to apply You need to apply for immigration preclearance to join your de facto Partner (CSEP holder) in Ireland before you travel to Ireland. Re entry visa requirement abolished for non EEA nationals 13 May 2019
If you are from a visa required country, and have a valid IRP card or GNIB card, you will no longer require a re-entry visa to leave and return to Ireland on or after 13 May 2019. You will be able to show your passport and IRP or GNIB card to prove to airlines and immigration officials that you have a right to travel to Ireland. You will be exempt from the requirement to hold a visa. See details of the changes here...
