3 5 Themes of Geography Location-where something is
Where is it on a map? Uses direction words (cardinal and intermediate directions) to describe the location) N, S, E, and W. NW, NE, SW, and SE.

4 5 Themes of Geography Location
Absolute location-a specific description of where something is located. 5 5 Themes of Geography Place-refers to the features that define an area and make a place unique Landforms bodies of water climate/weather animal and plant life natural resources Ethnic groups, language, religion Food, music, art, customs, holidays Ex. At 29,029 feet, Mt. Everest is the tallest mountain in the world. Ex. The Grand Canyon is the deepest, most awe inspiring canyon in the United States.

6 5 Themes of Geography Regions-areas that share at least one common characteristic Political-based on actual boundaries set by the government Border lines separating states or countries government Physical-based on physical features Mountain region, plains regions, rainforest Cultural-based on culture traits Language, religion, race, holidays, etc. What can you see or do when you visit? Selling/trading, jobs Mostly English is spoken here

7 5 Themes of Geography Movement-looks at why and how people, things, and ideas move Modes of Transportation (bikes, cars, airplanes, etc.) Goods (imports and exports) Sending of information (phone, text, TV, radio, postal service, internet) Ex. Many American Indians traveled from the southeast United States to Oklahoma on the Trail of Tears Ex. Many Nike shoes are made in Chinese factories & shipped to other countries Ex. Playing Xbox Live with a kid from Switzerland

Apply each of the 5 themes to Walker. Add an example of each to your notes. Movement How do we get to school or move throughout the school? Regions How is our school broken up? Human-Environment Interaction How do we adapt to the environment inside and outside of the school? Location 1 absolute & 1 relative example What is the address? What is the school near? What is our classroom near? Place Describe the school, our classroom, the culture or our school I have students apply the 5 Themes to our school because it’s something we all have in common. You could also have students apply the themes to their favorite TV show, movie, or book. The next slide shows some possible answers that students gave in my class after applying the themes to our schools.
