Function Notation
2
Function Notation What is it? Why is it needed? How does it work?
An alternative way of representing functions. Why is it needed? Complicated functions can be difficult to work with. This makes it easier. How does it work? That’s what we are going to do next.
3
Function Notation This is the output of the function. It replaces the variable y. This is the rule that determines the output. This is the name of the function (f is very common) it is often a lowercase letter. This is the input. The value that is to be substituted for x.
4
Function Notation Use the function to answer the following questions.
What is the value of the function when x = 5? What is the value of x when the function equals 11? What is the value of f(-2)? What value of x gives the solution f(x) = 23?
5
Function Notation The most difficult part is knowing where to put the given information: Into the variable x? Into the function f(x)? Once this is known, the solution is simple algebra.
6
Function Notation Use the function to answer the following questions.
What is the value of the function when x = -5? What is the value of x when the function equals 13? What is the value of f(6)? What value of x gives the solution f(x) = -9?
