1 First Trimester Exposure to Gadolinium-based Contrast Agents: A Utilization Study of 4.6 Million U.S. Pregnancies Bird S et al. Published Online: August 20, 2019 Among 4.6 million pregnancies resulting in a live birth, one in 860 pregnancies was exposed to gadolinium-based contrast agents (GBCAs). The majority (70.2%) of exposures to GBCAs occurred during the first trimester, although the exposure rate showed a decreasing trend during weeks 3–7 of pregnancy and was relatively stable during gestational weeks 8 through 35. Adherence to effective pregnancy screening measures may help reduce inadvertent exposure to GBCAs during early pregnancy.
