Schematic demonstration of hedgehog signal pathway. When Ptch is free from ligands, Ptch suppresses the activation of downstream signals. When ligands bind to Ptch, the negative signal from Ptch is released and the pathway is activated. Then, the terminal transcription factor, Gli1, translocates to the nucleus, and the transcription of target genes can be initiated.
