1 Ministry of Education Capacity Development Center
Basic Computer Course Introduction to ICT, The Internet & service Dr. Pa Pa Hlaing Assistant Director Depart of Technology Promotion and Coordination

2 Introduction to ICT Learning Objective
Acquire introductory familiarity with Information and Communication Technology ( ICT ) and Computer System

3 What is ICT? ICT Information and Communication Technology
Technologies that provide access to information through telecommunications New or modern technologies

4 Information Technology
Information Technology (IT) describes any technology that helps to produce, manipulate, store, communicate, and/or disseminate information

5 Communication Technology
Communications Technology refers to how computers, or any machines, communicate with each other or with people the processes of transferring data from one machine to another, using radio, telephone equipment, fax machines, video, or other means it helps people communicate more information to more people in less time with greater accuracy and fewer misunderstanding

6 Types of ICT Traditional:- Modern:-
Printed media, books, newspaper, journals, TV, radio etc Modern:- Computer, phones, internet, GPS etc Social Network Search Engine

7 Objective and application
Change the culture Improve confidence Promote new behaviors Applications:- e-government, e-commerce, e-education, e-health, e-environment

8 Merits and demerits Merits:- Demerits:- Access of learning resources
Knowledge sharing Wide population cover Demerits:- Cyber security Cyber bullying Costly infrastructure

9 Impact of ICT Impact of ICT:- Faster communication
Faster information sharing Paperless environment

10 What is a Computer? Computer is an electronic data processing machine
that accepts data and instructions through input unit and processes data and instruction into meaningful information Give meaningful information depend on Input instructions.

11 Computer System A computer has a monitor, a mouse, a keyboard and a case that contains other important parts. These physical components are called hardware. Instructions which are given to hardware are called software or programs. These hardware and software together make a computer system.

12 Types of Computer Tablets Laptops Desktops Smart phones

13 Basic operations of computer system
Data processing machine (Mathematical operations, Comparison, Logical operations) Input-Output machine Hardware + Software Input Process Output

14 Computer hardware The physical parts of computers are called hardware and include elements both inside and outside of the computer. All these pieces get wired together on a motherboard

15 Key elements of Hardware
Central Processing Unit (CPU) The brain of a computer Determine how fast the computer can make calculations Units: * GHz( Giga=109 Hertz) Random Access Memory (RAM) important factor in a computer’s performance RAM stores memory while your computer is running When your computer is switched off the RAM is erased Unit: * B(Bytes) The next key piece of computer hardware that we want to consider is the hard drive. The Hard drive is the physical location on which your computer’s information and data are stored. The hard drive looks like an aluminum box with circuits on the outside. Inside, it contains electronic disks on which information is stored in electronic form. This information can be read from and written to with electronic arms that function like a very precise record player arms. Check Basic information about your computer system.

16 Hard Drive To save work we need another memory and this is called the Hard Drive The Hard drive is the physical location on which your computer’s information and data are stored. Contains electronic disks on which information is stored in electronic form Unit: * B(Bytes) The next key piece of computer hardware that we want to consider is the hard drive. The Hard drive is the physical location on which your computer’s information and data are stored. The hard drive looks like an aluminum box with circuits on the outside. Inside, it contains electronic disks on which information is stored in electronic form. This information can be read from and written to with electronic arms that function like a very precise record player arms.

17 Ports and peripherals Peripherals are the external hardware devices that get plugged into your computer.

18 Computer Components Web Camera (input) Monitor (output)
Speaker (output) System unit (processor, memory…) Printer (output) Storage devices (CD-RW, Floppy, Hard disk, zip,…) Scanner (input) Mouse (input) Keyboard (input) Camera (input) Stereo head (input/output)

19 Software Software is the entire set of programs and procedures associated with a computer Software comes in two forms: System software: Operating Systems, Utility Programs Applications software: MS-word, PowerPoint, Mozila Firefox These systems are known together as “software.” In contrast to hardware, they are not physical elements, but rather the entire set of programs associated with a computer. You might think of software as sets of directions, that tell the hardware how to operate and what to do. We distinguish between two kinds of software: Operating system software and application software. Most operating systems and application programs have a graphical user interface (GUI)

20 System Software Operating System, or “OS,” software, is what lets the computer run by setting up the overall requirements in which tasks can be performed. Mac OS for Apple Unix , Linux Microsoft Windows Operating System, or “OS,” software, is what lets the computer run by setting up the work space environment in which tasks are performed. You can think of an OS as similar to electricity in a house or blood in a body – both are larger systems needed to undertake any operation. Application Software allows you to do different kinds of work in your workspace. Application software can be compared to a blender in your kitchen or your eye – both designed to perform specific tasks, rather than for keeping the entire system running.

21 Utility Software Utility software is system software designed to help to analyze, configure, optimize or maintain a computer Anti-virus, Disk defragmentation, Compression, File managers, Backup utilities

22 Application Software Application Software allows you to do different kinds of work. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Paint Application software is Designed to help users perform particular tasks, such as word processing, spreadsheets, or creative computer painting. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Paint are all examples of application software. Application software is sometimes referred to as software applications, applications, or programs. Application software must either be purchased (as Microsoft Office Suite, which includes several software programs) or downloaded from the Internet (usually for free) and installed.
