Hallway Procedures Adoption
Improvement cycle: AN ONGOING, INTEGRATED SEQUENCE OF ACTIVITIES DRIVEN BY THE FOUNDATIONS TEAM. The five steps of the improvement cycle are: Review: collect and analyze data. Prioritize: set priority goals for improvement. Revise: develop proposed policies or procedures to address priority goals. Adopt: staff formally approve policies, programs, or procedures. Implement: monitor and motivate staff and students.

Hallway Procedures Adoption
Staff members show their support or lack of support for a proposal by rating it on a 3-point scale, indicated with their thumbs. Thumb up= i fully support the proposal. Thumb sideways= i only partially support the proposal, but am willing to implement it. Thumb down= i cannot support the proposal. It will not be good for students. Anyone voting thumb down has to agree to help find an alternative to the proposal. Adoption criteria: the proposal is rejected if even one person votes thumb down. If staff vote to adopt the proposal, the foundations team works on its implementation. If staff reject the proposal, the foundations team works on developing an alternative proposal based on staff feedback, then presents it for a vote. After two additional attempts to revise the proposal (a total of three voting cycles), the issue should go to the principal, who will develop the final policy.

Brian Mendler Follow-Up. . .
Focus #1: ALL teachers will share the following with students by the end of the day Wednesday, 12/12/18 and again when we return from break on January 8, 2018.: “Unfortunately, some of you will do and say some rude, nasty, inappropriate things. Please understand I will not always stop my lesson to deal with it. This does not mean I did not hear it and this does not mean I am not going to do anything about it. It means I think teaching those not being inappropriate is much more important than stopping for the few who are. Sometimes it might look like I am ignoring a certain behavior. I am not. It just means I think teaching is more important in that moment. Is there anything you do not understand?” “I believe in privacy. There will be times I drop by your area to deliver a private message for your ear. Some of you might wonder what I said to that person. I will not share this message with the entire class.”

Focus #2: ALL teachers will be a "2nd to last word person". "Walk away, ignore it. This doesn't mean that you completely ignore what is said by the student forever, you just don't address it in that moment. This seeks to avoid escalating a student's behavior in the moment. If I change me, I change everything around me."

PACK for 2nd Semester. . . Thank you to all who have sent their PACK roster drafts. Please to Mrs. Oentrich upon completion/updating. We are currently meeting (admin, coaches & counselors) to determine intervention elective and intervention PACK placements. The schedule change has allowed for us open up some elective options for PACK. These will be assigned to students as extensions and will be on a 6-week rotation. We have just finalized these options, Mrs. Oentrich will be setting a time to discuss this with impacted staff. This will create more opportunities for our students as well as reduce the sizes of our Science & Social Studies PACKS. Coaches & Admin will be working with staff to better address student needs during PACK, including guidelines and resources for working with students. More information to be shared soon! Upon returning from break, we will spend the first few days of PACK teaching/re-teaching building- wide routines and procedures to students.
