1
The ELECTROMAGNETIC SPECTRUM!
2
What is the Electromagnetic Spectrum?
The arrangement of radiation consisting of electric and magnetic waves that travel at the speed of light. Radiation is arranged by wavelength.
3
Wavelength The distance between any two corresponding points on an adjacent wave.
4
How do Scientists use this information?
Draw a pic of: Box 1: a radio Box 2: a microwave oven Box 3: Heat lamp in animal cage Box 4: a rainbow Box 5: The sun Box 6: an x-ray Box 7: The Hulk!
5
Difference in Energy Long wavelength: low energy
Short wavelength: high energy Let’s draw a wavelength across the bar (whiteboard)
6
Radio: Used to transmit television signals and are important for many forms of communication
7
Microwave Used in cell phones and microwave ovens
8
Infrared Used to detect the formation of new stars in nebulas due to the heat they give off and as a heat lamp (roast beef at the buffet, animals in cages)
9
Visible The part of the spectrum that human eyes can visibly detect (see)
10
Ultraviolet Can be used to create sterile environments and treat jaundice in babies. Too much can cause sunburn.
11
X-Ray Used in medical practices to see internal structures. Used to study black holes
12
Gamma Ray Used to target and kill cancer cells. Also used to study black holes.
