The Current Grading System
GCSEs are ranked from grades 9-1 with a grade 9 being the highest and grade 1 the lowest All curriculum subjects were awarded number grades in In combined science, students gain 2 GCSE grades e.g or 6-5. A ‘standard pass’ grade for students is a 4 and a ‘strong pass’ is a 5. The new GCSEs are considerably different to the old GCSEs so we can only broadly compare grades in this way. They will put these in their planner These grades are based on the information we receive on your daughter from Key Stage 2 and the progress students make historically The grades we set are highly aspirational and are set to stretch and challenge We report on progress using the 9-1 grading system Love one another as I have loved you

21
Subjects she has chosen:
Should now be set but … If your daughter is not happy with a subject, she needs to come and see me as soon as possible She will have missed between 6 and 8 lessons and homework of the subject if she were to swap today, this is a lot of work and knowledge for her to catch up Love one another as I have loved you The subjects your daughter has chosen to study should now be set, however is she is struggling with a subject and would like to change subject can I please ask that she comes to see me as soon as possible so that we can discuss it We are in the middle of week 3 back which doesn’t sound like a long time, but in an academic year and for your daughter, this is a long time. She will have missed 6 to 8 hours of lessons with the attached knowledge and homework tasks. This is a lot of time for your daughter to catch up and may become an area of stress for her.
22
Controlled Assessments
Some subjects have Controlled Assessments which take the place of coursework The assessment must be completed in school It must be completed with supervision by a member of staff It is important for your daughter to keep up / catch up with any work that she may miss especially these controlled assessments Love one another as I have loved you Fewer of the new GCSEs have controlled assessments and they have reduced in duration, however there are still subjects with controlled assessments. These take the place of coursework and must be completed in school under supervision by a member of staff. There will be lessons set by the teacher in which controlled assessment work will take place, and your daughter will know in advance when this is due to take place. The work completed in a controlled assessment is marked and included in the overall grade awarded for the qualification. If your daughter knows she is going to be absent, she may be able to complete some of the controlled assessment in advance of being absent, otherwise she does need to catch up with the work she has missed – this applies to class work, home work and controlled assessments
