“Profane” = common, useless, provides no good “Old wives” = origin from old foolish women – having no substantial basis Refuse: “Abstain to be bothered” (Lenski) Show not worthy of time – don’t waste time giving them any attention Don’t waste time on useless material Time is precious in class or pulpit Take 5-10 minutes (or more) on useless – waste!

Reverence – piety toward God eusebeia NT:2150, from eu, "well," and sebomai, "to be devout," denotes that piety which, characterized by a Godward attitude, does that which is well-pleasing to Him (Vine) Contrast to fables – worthy of our time & attention Living a devout life!

Gymnasia – training (from which we get idea of gym) Work! (labor v. 10) “In the Greek and Roman Classics authors speak of training naked in gymnastic exercises; also, metaphorically, of training for or practicing an art or profession.” (Vincent) Remove all obstacles that stand in the way
