What happened when Germany invaded Poland?
Germany invades Poland on Sept. 1, 1939. Great Britain and France declare war on Germany. Describe what happened when Germany invaded France. Include Dunkirk. Germany conquers France in summer of 1940. GB and F troops are forced back to the sea at Dunkirk ,000 B troops are saved by large fleet of small privately owned boats.

Yes, G did attack GB Due to GB’s strong navy, G decided to use their air power, the Luftwaffe, to bomb the cities No, G was not successful in conquering GB. Although the bombings destroyed many buildings and killed thousands of civilians, the British did not surrender

Explain when and why Germany attacked the Soviet Union
G attacked SU because Hitler feared Stalin’s ambitions in Europe. G needs SU’s wheat and oil to keep military going. June ‘41, G attacks SU (Operation Barbarossa). Both sides have tremendous casualty counts. G’s are stopped short of their objective by the extreme winter conditions in Dec. ‘41

What was the Lend-Lease Act (LLA)?
LLA is approved by US Congress in 1941. LLA allowed US to lend (borrow) or lease (rent) supplies to allies GB, SU. US was still trying to at least appear “neutral” US sent GB, SU approx. $50 bill.

Explain Japan’s plan to build their empire. Tojo planned to invade the Dutch East Indies, a source of oil and other Asian territories China and Manchuria. What was Japan’s view of US at this time? The U.S. Navy stood in their way of their expansion plans.

Describe what, when, where the Japanese did to the US?
On December 7, 1941 Japanese warplanes bombed the American naval base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. What were the US casualty counts? Over 2,400 serviceman and civilians died in the attack, and the U.S. fleet was devastated with many ships and warplanes destroyed or damaged. What did US do in response to Japan’s actions? Dec 8th, President Roosevelt asked Congress to declare war on Japan. What did Germany and Italy do in response to US action? Dec. 11 Japan’s allies Germany and Italy declared war on the U.S.

What social changes happened for people of Mexican heritage? Mexican workers known as “braceros” served as farm labors at the request of the U.S. government, but faced prejudice and violence. Riots broke out in 1943 in Los Angeles after they were attacked by American serviceman.

What social changes happened for women?
Men were fighting overseas. In million women worked and by the number rose to more than 19 million in munitions factories, shipyards, and offices. Working women were symbolized by “Rosie the Riveter.” More than 300,000 also served in the armed forces.

One million served and one of the most well-known were the Tuskegee Airman, African American pilots and crewman who served with honor in North Africa and Europe.

African Americans moved out of the south to defense industry jobs. Racial tensions increased A. Philip Randolph was an African-American labor leader who fought against discrimination in the defense industries

Civilians were asked to help in the war effort
Rationing: people were asked to conserve and were given fixed amounts of certain products; gasoline, butter, bread, etc. Certain items were extremely scare: tires, no cars were built, and pennies were even made of steel. War Bonds: some taxes were raised and people were asked to buy war bonds to help finance the war.

Explain what happened to the Japanese-American after Pearl Harbor.
Japanese-Americans experienced the most prejudice after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. In Feb. 1942; FDR signed executive Order that allowed the removal of Japanese and Japanese-Americans from the Pacific Coast. It is known as Japanese-American Internment. More than 110,000 men, women, and children were rounded up and forced to sell their homes and possessions, leave jobs, and move to prison- like camps. More than two-thirds were Nisei-born in the U.S.
