Section 2 Physical geography is the study of the earth’s land and features. People who work in this field are called physical geographers. Climate is not the same thing as weather. Weather is the conditions at a specific time and place.

Studying Locations Location is the exact description of where something is. Every place on earth has a specific location. A map is a drawing of an area. Maps can show physical features, cities, countries or boundaries of states.

A region is an area with one or more features that make it different from the surrounding area. These features can be physical or by human features.

Geography and History Geography gives us important clues about the people and places that came before us. We can piece together information about ancient people and cultures by knowing where people lived and what the area was like.

Geography also played a role in the growth of civilizations. The world’s first civilizations formed along the rivers. Some geographic features could also protect areas from invasion.

Geography has helped shape history and has affected the growth of societies. Geography has also caused many problems. For example, floods and droughts have killed millions of people. There is also a relationship between geography and people.
