1 1. On the next clean page in your notebook, label it UNIT 4: GENETICS
Do First: 1. On the next clean page in your notebook, label it UNIT 4: GENETICS Next page: Title it DO FIRST: Week of 1.4 2. Describe yourself in 10 sentences.

2 Inherited Trait Acquired Trait Both

3 A trait is …. a characteristic that you can observe. Examples are:
What is a trait? A trait is …. a characteristic that you can observe. Examples are:

4 What is an inherited trait?
Inherited or Acquired What is an inherited trait? A trait that is passed onto you from your parents. What is an acquired trait? A trait that you learn or develop through your life. Some traits can be a combination.

5 Wearing colored contacts?
What about …. Dying your hair? Piercing your ears? Wearing colored contacts?

6 Inherited Traits Survey
Cleft Chin:

7 Earlobs

8 Widow’s peak

9 Do Now What is a trait? What are examples of inherited traits? Where do inherited traits come from? Why do brothers and sisters look alike? Do you inherit traits from your brothers and sisters?

10 Inherited Vs. Acquired Traits: Review
A trait is a quality that identifies an organism, it is easily observable. An acquired trait is not passed on genetically or something learned. Examples: ____________________ An inherited trait is passed on genetically from parents to offspring. Examples:_____________________

11 Inherited Vs. Acquired Traits: Review
Inherited traits are passed down genetically and acquired traits are not. Acquired traits can be learned and inherited traits are what you are born with.

12 Quick Challenge Identify if the traits are acquired or inherited. 1. Deafness at birth ___________ 2. Eye color ___________ 3. Hair length___________ 4. Blinded by an accident ____________ 5. Widow’s peak (pointy hairline) _____________ 6. Gender ______________

13 What is heredity? Heredity is the passing on of genetic
instructions from one generation to the next. Genetic Instructions: DNA or Genes Generation: An age level within the family--Grandparents/Parents/Children= three different generations.

15 What are genes? x7Ik

16

17 Genetic Instructions: Structure
1. All organisms are made of cells. 2. All eukaryotic cells have a nucleus.

18 Genetic Instructions: Structure
3. Inside the nucleus are chromosomes. 4. All humans have 23 pairs of chromosomes. 5. One chromosome comes from mother and the other chromosome comes from father.

19

20 Genetic Instructions: Structure
6. Chromosomes contain DNA, 7. DNA looks like a twisted ladder or a double helix. 8. A gene is a section of DNA.

21 Genetic Instructions: Structure
9. Genes code for specific traits. There are genes for eye color, hair color….all inherited traits. 10. For each trait, an offspring gets one gene from its mother and one gene from its father. 11. So for every trait, there are (at least) two genes that control it.

22 Freckles: An example A person has freckles.
They can either have the genes Ff or FF that code for freckles. One F came from one parent and the other F or f came from the other parent.

24 Stop and Think for a minute:
1. What information did you already know? 2. What information is new to you?
