1 Rubric for Assignment 1 Classwork Grade 25 20 15 10 Science Fair Topic
The Science Fair Topic is detailed and specific enough to be easily developed into a Research Question without further investigation. The Science Fair Topic can be developed into a Research Question with some further clarification. The Science Fair Topic must be revised completely. The Science Fair Topic was not submitted by the deadline. Science Fair Form Form is turned in and complete. Form is turned in and missing student signature. Form is turned in and parent signature. Form is not turned in.

2 Setting up your Research Log & Identifying the Research Question
Science Fair Project Step #1: Setting up your Research Log & Identifying the Research Question

3 FRONT COVER ________Your Name_________
______Teacher Name, Period #, Franklin Academy Science Fair Project, Telephone # (See your teacher if this presents a hardship)

4 Each Entry Must Include DATE & DESCRIPTION OF TASKS COMPLETED
EXAMPLES: Monday, 9/23/19 Purchased Research Log from Wal-Mart, Labeled Front Cover Tuesday, 9/24/19 Researched project topics on ___________ (list all websites used to find project) Selected Research Question: _________________________ (write out research question) Identified Variables & Constants: (list variables & at least 3 constants) Independent (Test) Variable _________________________ Dependent (Outcome) Variable ______________________ Constants _______________________ _______________________

5 Resources for Finding Projects
Check MYP Sciences Websites for all documents. 6th: 7th: 8th:

6 Step #2: Completing background research & summarizing information

7 Where do you start? You need a plan!
Brainstorm key words- look at your research question. Underline the key words in your question. Pick a search engine – try the following: Skip Wikipedia & go to sites that are verified and you know are accurate. Good examples of websites to use are college and university websites, websites from government organizations or agencies, or science societies.

8 REQUIRED BACKGROUND INFO
If you are using any of the following items in your project, you MUST include the listed information in your background research: Chemicals (anything other than food/edible substances)- SAFETY PRECAUTIONS & WHAT TO DO IF INGESTED/ON SKIN Fire/Heat- SAFETY PRECAUTIONS, INCLUDE WHAT TO DO IF…

9 SUGGESTED BACKGROUND INFO
If you are using any special equipment to gather your data (anything other than a stopwatch, ruler, thermometer, graduated cylinder/measuring cup or balance), include information about how to use the equipment and/or safety considerations. If your data will be qualitative instead of quantitative, research how you can put a scale (numbers) to your observations.

10 What do you write? When you find information that you need in order to be able to answer your research question, write it down. BUT! DO NOT COPY IT WORD FOR WORD. Read it and think of how you would explain or summarize it for someone that cannot see the page - that is how you should write it down. You MUST include a citation for any information you use that someone else wrote (whether you quote or paraphrase).

11 How do you cite the source?
Book Last name, First name. Title of Book. Place of Publication: Publisher, Year of Publication. Magazine or newspaper Author(s). "Title of Article." Title of Periodical Day Month Year: pages. If you are using a scholarly journal, like American Mathematical Society Monthly, there is a different format: Author(s). "Title of Article." Title of Journal Volume. Issue (Year): pages. Website Name of Site. Date of Posting/Revision. Name of institution/organization affiliated with the site (sometimes found in copyright statements). Date you accessed the site <electronic address (this is

12 In your log… 1st write the citation for the source you are using.
PARAPHRASE what you learned from the source WRITE how this information is related to your research question (You are answering the question: How does this research help you answer your research question or make your prediction?) Example: In order to predict how the angle at which the football is thrown affects the distance it travels, knowledge of how the air interacts with the outside of the football is important. By understanding this concept, I was able to learn that reducing friction from air is going to increase the distance the ball travels. I think that the amount of friction on the football is going to increase when the ball is thrown higher in the air because it is flatter on the sides than from end to end. (See diagram)

13 Requirements: Minimum number of sources: 5
Directions: Take accurate notes of the central ideas in your own words. Do NOT COPY sentences or phrases directly! Do not print information from the internet and paste it into your Research Log. Your notes should be hand-written and approximately 1-2 pages long for each resource. Citations: Record your source information for your bibliography (four sources may be websites; others should be something different, for example an interview with an expert, textbook, books, etc.) directly into your research log. If you use more than 5 sources, just 1 of them cannot be a website.

14 Assignment #2: Research Question/Background Research
Your research log should be turned in on Friday, 9/27/19. It should be properly labeled (front cover) and include entries for each part of the project completed so far Purchase/select research log (composition book) Select research topic Write research question Identify variables & constants Complete background research

15 Assignment #2 Rubric Quiz Grade 20 15 10 5 Science Fair
Question/Problem The Science Fair Question/Problem expresses a clear and concise thought that can be experimented through a Science Fair Project. The Science Fair Question/Problem is mostly a clear and concise thought that requires minor changes in order to be experimented through a Science Fair Project. The Science Fair Question/Problem is not clear and concise and requires major changes in order to be experimented through a Science Fair Project. The Science Fair Question/Problem was not submitted by the deadline. Cover: Name, Teacher’s Name, Period #, School Name, Science Fair, Years, Telephone Number All elements included Missing 1 required element Missing 2 required elements Missing more than 2 required elements Variables & Constants All variables & 3 constants are correctly identified 1 variable or constant is incorrectly identified 2 variables and/or constants are incorrectly identified 3 or more variables and/or constants are incorrectly identified Background Research Sources 5 or more appropriate, correctly cited, resources with at least one non-internet source. At least 4 appropriate, correctly cited resources or all 5 resources are websites At least 3 appropriate, correctly cited resources are recorded in the log book. At least 2 appropriate, correctly cited resources are recorded in the log book. Science Fair Background Research Summaries Each resource has a 1-page explanation, including details of how the student will use this information in their Science Fair Project. 4 of the resources have a 1-page explanation, including details of how the student will use this information in their Science Fair Project. 3 of the resources have a 1-page explanation, including details of how the student will use this information in their Science Fair Project. 2 or fewer of the resources have a 1-page explanation, including details of how the student will use this information in their Science Fair Project.
